Maison de France, 70 ans ma parole !

70 years of german french history under one roof. Exhibition (2020)

A symbol of Franco-German friendship ? A diplomatic vehicle ? An emblem of a Berlin divided at the end of the Second World War ? A window to the French culture ? A linguistic laboratory ? A patrimonial item to be preserved ? A second home ? The Maison de France reflects a different image to each and every one of those who know this Berlin institution.

It is this multiplicity of facets that the exhibition explores by giving a voice to those who have seen the House evolve over the decades or who participated in its construction: ordinary visitors, politicians, former directors, ambassadors, journalists or employees.
Through their eyes and memories, we enter into the intimacy of this old lady who is blowing out her 70 candles this year.

We discover her story, rich in twists and turns, which has become part of Berlin’s turbulent history. Finally, we learn why and how the Maison de France can sometimes be likened to a gazelle, a novel by Proust, a seagull or a merguez with French fries.

” It is always amazing, wherever you look in the world, you will experience this phenomenon again and again: even when people are in dire need, the need for cultural enlightenment is always there.”
