Moving frontiers

The evolution of borders in Central Europe
Exhibition (2009)

Borders are a fascinating object of study: as geographical lines, they define the boundaries of a nation; they are two-dimensional entities with a measurable length, but no width. Although it describes an abstract line, in everyday language the term “border” refers to a physical location. In light of this paradox between space and concept, between abstract and concrete, the border is a complex system.

The “Moving frontiers” exhibition, produced by Maison de l’Architecture et de la Ville de Lille in 2009 as part of the programme of events of Lille 3000, illustrates the complexity and multifaceted nature of borders by dwelling on 7 of the 238 sites documented in the database “Frontier Survey”.

Models, video montages, photographs, maps and items collected from the sites allowed visitors to explore the historical, psychological, symbolic, economic and geopolitical dimensions of the border, from the visible to the invisible, from the palpable to the impalpable. The exhibition, featuring scenography developed by Atelier Smagghe, was also displayed at the Haus der Architektur in Baden-Baden.
