Young architects, artists and researchers take action to halt the degradation of Abidjan’s lagoon.

The city of Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s economic capital and the second-largest city in the French-speaking world, with a population of 5 million, is built on the edge of a lagoon – a fragile ecosystem that is now severely endangered by pollution and urban development. From the first trading posts built by French settlers to the seething metropolis it has become today, the city and its inhabitants have always had a complex relationship with the water, which is explored by young Abidjanian architects, artists and scientists in the project “J’aime ma lagune”.
Realising that the lagoon is crucial to the city’s image and development, the participants in the initiative, funded by the Goethe Institut Abidjan, rely on awareness-raising and citizen participation to put forward micro-solutions at the local scale, taking into account the social, ecological and cultural dimensions of this complex ecosystem.
“The lagoon is an entire ecosystem. I give to you, you give to me. I pollute you, you pollute me.”
The film is aimed first and foremost at the inhabitants of Abidjan, but its purpose is also to influence viewers elsewhere, particularly those who might be willing to take action to help preserve the lagoon.
