Border Speaking

A travelling cycle of screenings along the former Schengen border

20 years on from the fall of the Berlin Wall.

 Event (2009)

From 20 July to 20 October 2009, equipped with the film “The barriers within”, subtitled in seven languages, we set off to meet the residents of border regions. We retraced our Świnoujście-San Bartolomeo route – this time from South to North – along the boundary that, until December 2007, had separated the “old” EU countries from the new additions.
We made 40 stops along the way, from the Adriatic to the Baltic, in schools, public spaces, cultural centres, churches and former border posts converted into cinemas for the occasion. In all, around 2,000 viewers of eight nationalities attended the 40 screenings/discussions to talk about the film and the issue of borders.

“I liked the film especially because it does not judge and allows us to make our own point of view. I hope the borders will disappear as soon as possible …  ”

Petra (Ostritz)

The event, conceived, produced and coordinated by Atelier Limo, took place in partnership with around 60 local organisations. The final screening on 18 November 2009 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin (www.hkw.de) was followed by a debate with the historian and author Karl Schlögel.
